Prior to this role, she worked as an associate editor for Simon and Schuster from 1987 to 1989, a research fellow of Harvard Divinity School in 1986, and the dean of Emmanuel College from 1980 to 1986. Likewise, she served as the director of research and director of the Bunting Institute from 1975 to 1980, a professor at Newton College from 1973 to 1975 and an associate professor at Simmons College from 1969 to 1973. Dr. Kilson began her career as a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute from 1968 to 1970 and both an instructor and assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts from 1966 to 1968.
Dr. Kilson initially pursued an education at Radcliffe College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. She continued her studies at Stanford University, earning a Master of Arts in 1959. Dr. Kilson concluded her academic efforts at Harvard University, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967.
A respected voice in her areas of expertise, Dr. Kilson has been affiliated with a number of organizations in her community. The former president of the Massachusetts chapter of the American Association of University Women, she has also found success as president of Massachusetts Women in Public Higher Education. Additionally, she has been appointed to the boards of directors for the American Association of University Women Education Foundation and the Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund. Moreover, Dr. Kilson notably contributed as the former vice president and co-curator of "Words of Thunder: William Lloyd Garrison" at the Boston Public Library.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kilson has been celebrated for her contributions. The recipient of the Scholastic Award from the National Council of Ghanaian Associates, Inc., she has accepted grants from the Social Science Research Council, the National Endowment of the Humanities, and the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Kilson has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who of American Women.
