In addition to his primary roles, he was Charles and Nancy Brickman distinguished service chair from 1998 to 2001, director of the honors program from 1987 to 2002, dean of the college from 1978 to 1983, and department chair from 1973 to 1978, 1984 to 1987, and 2008 to 2009. Earlier in his career, Dr. Lisska was an associate professor with the school from 1976 to 1981, having been an assistant professor from 1969 to 1976.
Dr. Lisska began his career as a student at Providence College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy, cum laude, in 1963. He subsequently joined St. Stephen's College, completing a Master of Arts in philosophy in 1967. He concluded his studies with the Ohio State University in 1971, earning a Doctor of Philosophy. Dr. Lisska has been certified by the Institute for Educational Management and Harvard University.
A respected voice in the industry, Dr. Lisska has been an active leader in his community. He served on the program committee of the American Philosophical Association and as president, vice president, and on the executive council of the American Catholic Philosophical Association. He is a member of the National Collegiate Honors Council, the Society of Ancient Greek Philosophy, the Society for Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy, the International Thomas Aquinas Society, the New England Political Science Association, and Phi Beta Kappa.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lisska has been honored for his contributions. He was named Carnegie Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation, and he received a Sears Foundation Teaching Award and a Historian of the Year Award. A grantee of the National Endowment of the Humanities, he was named an R.C. Good Fellow four times. Dr. Lisska has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
