With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Katzner has been an economics professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst since 1975, also serving as chair of the department from 1976 to 1981. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a lecturer at the University of California, San Diego, from 1973 to 1975 and a professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, from 1971 to 1973, having been associate professor from 1970 to 1971. Earlier in his career, Dr. Katzner was an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania from 1965 to 1971.

Dr. Katzner began his career as a student at Oberlin College and Conservatory, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. He then joined the University of Minnesota, completing a Master of Arts in 1962. He concluded his studies with the university in 1965, earning a Doctor of Philosophy.

A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Katzner has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the American Economic Association and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, he has written numerous books (listed below) and chapters to books, as well as served on the editorial board of related publications. Dr. Katzner has also served as a visiting professor at Osaka University in Japan, a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an invited professor at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in France, and an invited fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences.

Throughout his career, Dr. Katzner has been recognized for his contributions. A Ford Foundation fellow, he has been a grantee of the U.S. Department of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Social Science Research Council. He has been honored with university medals from Mongolian National University and the Poznan University of Economics, and his 2011 history of the 'radical period' of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst's Economics Department was celebrated at a conference of the International Confederation of Associations for Pluralism in Economics. He has further been featured in numerous honors publications, including the 27th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry and the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the East.

Most of Dr. Katzner's published research has spanned six general areas: microeconomic and general equilibrium theory, the methodology of building models and analyzing phenomenon when measures of appropriate variables are neither available nor reasonably constructible, the analysis of uncertain economic phenomena when it is inappropriate to employ notions of probability (as is often the case when considering the making of economic decisions), the relationship between culture and economic behavior, internal organizational issues within the firm, and the history of the UMass Economics Department during the tumultuous period 1965-1981.
