George Stone, Ph.D. Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

George C. Stone is the oldest child of the late Clifford L. and Melba R. Stone of Rosiclare, Illinois. He has a younger sister, Patricia (Stone) Jewell and a younger brother, Paul S. Stone. Clifford and his father were fluorspar miners in Rosiclare while Melba's father was a brick mason. George graduated from Rosiclare Community High School in 1956, and after attending a vocational program in electronics for one year, followed his father and grandfather into mining where he worked as an Instrument Technician at Minerva Oil Company's Mine #1 flotation mill, Cave-in-Rock, Illinois. When the mines closed in late 1959, George registered for classes at Southern Illinois University. While there, he met Helen R. Gluesenkamp in 1960 and they were married in August 1961.

Helen Ruth (Gluesenkamp) Stone, the daughter of the late Oliver and Ella Gluesenkamp of St. Peter, Illinois, is a retired high school English teacher. She and George have five children---Scott Mitchell Stone MBA, CFA; Jeffrey Clifford Stone, Ph.D.; Gregory George Stone, Ph.D.; Kelly Kristin (Stone) Ault, M.Ed in Counselor Education; and Brett Alan Stone, Ph.D. George and Helen have eleven grandchildren as follows: Sawyer Stone, son of Scott Stone and his first wife, Cathy L. Goodwin-Stone; Payton and Kayla Stone twin son and daughter of Jeffrey and Kerri Stone; Amber and Michelle Stone, daughters of Gregory and Melinda Stone; Heath and Cory Ault, son and daughter of Herb and Kelly (Stone) Ault; Sydney Stone; Matthew Stone; Hannah Stone; and Sophia Stone, children of Brett and Tanja Stone. George and Helen have one great grandchild, Kayson Mendes, Amber's son.

George took his B.A. with majors in both History and Government, and his M.A. in history from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He completed Ph.D. coursework in history at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, and then transferred his Ph.D. program to a major in Cultural Foundations of Education (History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Education) at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. As part of his program, the Departments of Philosophy and History certified him competent in History of Philosophy and Philosophic Method, and Historiography and Historical Method respectively. Dr. Stone was inducted into four honor societies and was awarded several graduate assistantships and fellowships, including a National Teaching Fellowship. While working on his dissertation, he was named a Special Doctoral Fellow in University-wide competition.

Dr. Stone spent his professional career in four, four-year, Presbyterian related, undergraduate, liberal arts colleges and universities. Beginning in 1971 through 1990 he was both a faculty member and an administrator at Sterling College, Sterling, Kansas where he held academic rank of Professor of Education, History, and Philosophy. Over those nineteen years, he served from time-to-time as a Division Chair in each of two Academic Divisions, Humanities and Social Sciences. He taught courses in history, government, philosophy and education and served for a time as the Director of Teacher Education where he successfully led the program into full accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) at Sterling College and later at the University of the Ozarks.

In 1990, Dr. Stone moved his family to Lyon College, Batesville, Arkansas where he accepted an appointment as the endowed chair in Education---the Roundtree Caldwell Bryan Distinguished Professor of Education. Two years later he accepted additional administrative responsibilities as Division Chair of Social Science. George remained in those positions until 1999 when he accepted an appointment as Dean of the School of Education and Dean of the Graduate School at Buena Vista University. Storm Lake, Iowa. In 2001, he decided to return to Arkansas as Professor of Education at the University of the Ozarks, Clarksville, Arkansas. In 2006, the University honored him with an appointment to the endowed chair in Education. Dr. Stone remained at the University until 2010 when he retired with the prestigious appointment as Professor Emeritus.

George decided to return to teaching on a part-time basis in 2012. He accepted an appointment as Adjunct Professor of History from Columbia College, Columbia, Missouri to teach on-line courses in World History. He remained in that position until he officially retired in 2018.

During his professional career, Dr. Stone was awarded a number of scholarly grants, including grants from the Association of American Colleges, the Kansas Committee for the Humanities, and the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation. He published many scholarly articles in professional journals, and made numerous scholarly presentations at professional meetings, including delivering a research paper entitled, "John Dewey's Philosophy of History as a Guide to the International Order" presented at the 20th Oxford Roundtable, Pembroke College, Oxford University, Oxford, England. (2008).

George was named the 2010 William Drake Lecturer by the Educational Foundations Society: A Society for the Historical, Philosophical, Ethical, and Social Foundations of Education and he served as President, Society for the Philosophy and History of Education, 2004 - 2005. He served on the first Arkansas Professional Standards Licensure Board in 2008, and was a co-author of the "Code of Ethics for Arkansas Public School Educators." He was twice elected as winner of the McCreery Award for Excellence in Teaching, 1979 and 1985 at Sterling College. He was named a Wye Fellow and attended the Wye Institute on the Great Books in 1991. George has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Education.

Dr. Stone has been very active in the civil life of the communities in which he has lived. He served in various adult leadership roles in the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded several Scout honors. He was recognized by the Kansas Committee for the Humanities for his work with their bicentennial program, "Strive Toward America's Roots (STAR) in 1988. George served as Chair, Lyons, Kansas Public Library Board where he worked with both the public library and the Rice County Kansas Museum, particularly leading public tours across the Old Santa Fe Trail in Rice County. United States Secretary of the Interior Donald P. Hodel appointed George to serve on the Santa Fe National Historic Trail Advisory Council to make the Old Santa Fe Trail a nine-hundred mile, private and public, National Historic Park.

Kiwanis International recognized George four times as a Distinguished Club President. He also served as a Kiwanis Lt. Governor for two years in Arkansas. Additionally, he was twice named Kiwanian of the Year by the Clarksville, Arkansas Kiwanis Club. Dr. Stone was also recognized by the Kansas U.S. Army Military Radio System (MARS) for his work as Kansas Army MARS Training Officer, 1975-1990, and when he lived at Storm Lake, Iowa from 1999 – 2001, he served as a member of the Iowa Navy/Marine MARS Program. When he returned to Arkansas in 2001, he joined the Arkansas Army MARS Program from 2001- 2010. George has held Amateur Radio License (Advanced Class) for over 50 years with FCC assigned call signs as the following: W9KSD, WB0PJP, and W5KSD. He also taught adult Sunday School classes in the Methodist Church in every community in which he and his family have lived.

George Stone is a Master Mason and served as Master of the Lodge, Russellville, Arkansas Lodge #274 during 2016. He is a 32º Mason in the Scottish Rite and has held numerous leadership positions in the York Rite degrees.

George and Helen currently live with their dog, Peg, in the Ozarks Mountains in a lodge style home designed by Helen. They enjoy travel, the Arkansas Symphony, reading, and various community, social, and church activities.
