Dr. Koenig has been a tenured Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and an Academic Advisory Dean at the University of Louisville since 2010. She was hired by the University of Louisville as an associate professor in 2004, after teaching at the University of Illinois-Chicago and Michael Reese Hospital between 1993 and 2004.
Responsibilities in scholarly activities include conducting research regarding cerebrovascular reactivity in the presence of inhalational anesthetics, perioperative application of jet injection or needle free drug delivery systems, how to safely reentering practice after an absence, providing anesthesia for craniotomies and empowering patients with information regarding difficult airways. She has authored and co-authored numerous peer reviewed papers, authored numerous chapters in basic science and clinical books, and since 2016, has been serving as the editor in chief of the Federation of State Medical Boards Journal of Medical Regulation. Further she is involved in medical education and mentoring of students, residents, fellows and practicing physicians.

Currently serving on the board of the Kentucky Society of Anesthesiologists since 2010, Dr. Koenig has also served as a member of the House of Delegates and a task force of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. She served on the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure from 2013 to 2017. She is a long time member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Anesthesiology and Alpha Omega Alpha among others.
Dr. Koenig considered a career in healthcare after high school. She enjoyed her science courses so much that she received a B.S. from Wayne state College in 1980. She then worked in a plant pathology research laboratory under Anne K Videvar, Ph.D., who mentored and helped Dr. Koenig realize that she had potential to pursue a career in medicine. In 1985, Dr. Koenig received her M.D. from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She then interned at Southwest Michigan Area Health Education Center, trained in Surgery at Michael Reese Medical Center and finished a residency in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Neuroanesthesiology at the University of Illinois-Chicago. She is certified and recertified through the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Koenig is grateful to all her teacher, professors and mentors from grade school through her postgraduate medical education and ongoing in her current practice.
Happily married to William Walter Holt, M.D., Ph.D. since 1993, Dr. Koenig is the proud mother of two sons. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, cooking, gardening, travelling and hiking.
