Considering himself as much of a naturalist as he does an artist, W. Scott Rawlins has focused on botanical and zoological illustration throughout his career

Utilizing 40 years of experience, Mr. Rawlins has excelled for more than 20 years at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania. Inspired by his high school biology teacher, Mabel Stauber, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Earlham College. He later earned a Master of Arts in Teaching in museum education from the George Washington University and a Master of Fine Arts in medical illustration from the University of Michigan. At the time, the medical illustration program at the University of Michigan was considered to be among the top programs of its kind in the country.
Currently, Mr. Rawlins serves as a full Professor in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Acadia University where he teaches scientific illustration, general illustration and design. Considering himself as much of a naturalist as he does an artist, he has focused on botanical and zoological illustration throughout his career, which has allowed him to pursue an interdisciplinary profession with elements of both science and art. Likewise, prior to accepting a full-time teaching position at Arcadia University, Mr. Rawlins worked in various capacities as a museum professional. Museums with which he has been associated include The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, The Trailside Nature & Science Museum in Mountainside, NJ, The Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, MD, and most recently, The Public Museum of Grand Rapids, MI. Since 1995, Mr. Rawlins has assisted with research in the vertebrate zoology department at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
In addition, Mr. Rawlins was involved in a limited capacity with the education department at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and also worked as an adjunct instructor at the Kendall College of Art and Design (now part of Ferris State University). He has also offered his expertise to the field as a contributing author for The Guild Handbook of Scientific Illustration. As an educator, he enjoys his role as a college professor because he is able to interact directly and for a sustained period with his students. He has taken courses with professors who taught him, he has sat in classes with his current students, and some of his former instructors have taken his workshops as well. Mr. Rawlins has found that he is able to continuously learn from everyone in his field, which helps him to remain humble.
As a testament to his professional talent, Mr. Rawlins received the Members Choice Award from the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators in 2002 and 2013. Most recently, he accepted the Juror's Award from Focus on Nature XIV in 2017, and the Wes Rose Access and Inclusion Award in 2018. Mr. Rawlins is a member of the American Association of Museums, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Artists. In addition, he is a member of the Phi Beta Delta and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. Mr. Rawlins' illustrations have appeared in numerous books, including Your Inner Fish, The Guild Handbook of Scientific Illustration and Shackelford's Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. Journals that have published his illustrations include Acta Zoologica, Records of the Australian Museum, Harvard's Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, Geobios and Zootaxa.
