He went on to earn a Master of Science from Cornell University in 1966, as well as a Master of Journalism from the University of California in 1972. Currently a science writer in Palo Alto, CA, he started out as a physicist at Knolls Atomic Power Lab and transitioned to the writing field, becoming the science and society editor for Science News Magazine in 1973 and research journalist for the Fulbright Foundation in Tokyo, Japan, in 1977. He went on to work as a West Coast editor for Science News Magazine and High Tech Magazine, demonstrating his considerable ability within his chosen field.
Mr. Douglas decided to pursue science writing after initially writing a weekly science column for the in 1967. Highly motivated as a freelance writer, he did stringer work for Time Magazine in Berkeley, CA, from 1971 to 1973 and was a part-time correspondent for Nature Magazine from 1978 to 1979. He has also contributed his skills to the Electric Power Research Institute through consultant work since 1979. Due to his considerable professional expertise, Mr. Douglas has written such works as "The Future World of Energy," published in 1984, and "Parent Power," published in 1977.
Notable in his field for his skill set as well as his ability to mentor younger journalists, Mr. Douglas has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Science in Society Award from the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing in 1977. He was also a Founder's Scholar at Vanderbilt University in 1959, and he received the Fulbright Fellowship for Working Journalists in 1977. Due to his work with the Fulbright Foundation, Mr. Douglas spent time as an American foreign correspondent in Japan, which he considers one of his career highlights.
Also interested in civic involvement, Mr. Douglas volunteered with the United States Peace Corps from 1967 to 1969. He was president of the Northern California Science Writers Association from 1980 to 1981, and he maintains involvement with the National Association of Science Writers. Due to his prominent standing in his field, Mr. Douglas was honored in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the West.
