With 25 years of professional experience, Ms. Swanson worked as an English teacher at Grant Community High School in Fox Lake, IL, from 1967 to 1992, where she served as the chair of the English department from 1975 to 1986. In addition to her primary responsibilities, she has been an active leader in her community, with appointments as the Local Site Coordinator for the Educational Research and Dissemination Project for Local 504 of the American Federation of Teachers and both as a workshop presenter and consultant for the Illinois State Board of Education. She is a member of the Lake County Federation of Teachers, the Illinois Retired Teachers' Association, and the Lake County Retired Teachers' Association. Furthermore, Ms. Swanson is a former president of the McHenry County Illinois Retired Teachers' Association and the McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society. She was also the long-time secretary of the Illinois Association of Teachers of English and the Jacob Hochstetler Family Association.
Ms. Swanson began her career as a student at Illinois Wesleyan University, completing coursework from 1953 to 1954. She later returned to her studies at Northern Illinois University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education, with high honors in 1967 and a Master of Science in Education in 1973. She continued her education with coursework at Chicago State University, Roosevelt University, Elmhurst College, and Goddard College. Ms. Swanson is certified as a teacher in the state of Illinois.
Throughout her career, Ms. Swanson has been celebrated for her contributions, including having received an Award from Grant Community High School. She was recognized as the Retired McHenry County Teacher of the Year and the Retired Lake County Teacher of the Year. A Unit Honoree of the Lake County Retired Teachers Association, Ms. Swanson has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who of American Women.
