Diverse in his professional endeavors, Dr. Metcalf excelled as a clinical associate professor of medicine at the State University of New York School of Medicine from 1975 to 1987. He also served this esteemed academic institute as an advisor to the council on graduate medical education and as a clinical professor since 1988. Interested in science from a young age, he was motivated to pursue medicine by an influential Sunday School teacher. Now a celebrated professional, Dr. Metcalf is notable for his compassion in family medicine and his enthusiasm for teaching.
Due to his unparalleled professional achievements, Dr. Metcalf has been presented with numerous awards in his industry, including the State University of New York School of Medicine's Outstanding Service Award in 1983, the Ruth and Louis Siegel Teaching Award in 1985, the New York State Academy President's Award in 1989 and the Richard Sarkin Award for excellence in teaching from the University at Buffalo in 2011, among many others. He maintains membership with numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy Family Physicians Foundation, for which he was president from 1992 to 1994, and the New York State Medical Society. Dr. Metcalf is also a fellow with the American Academy of Family Physicians, having previously held the post of national president. He has further been recognized with the Alumnus of the Year Award from SUNY Buffalo in 2012 and was in the Gold Humanism Honor Society at SUNY Buffalo in 2007.
