With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Colwell has worked as a freelance first assistant director, unit production manager, and director since 1978, having held the roles of a producer, unit production manager, and first assistant director with MCI Productions from 1975 to 1978. Prior to these appointments, he excelled as a producer and director for Tracy-Locke Advertising from 1973 to 1975, KDFW-TV from 1970 to 1973, and KDTV-TV, now known as KXTX-TV, from 1967 to 1970. Earlier in his career, Dr. Colwell found success as an announcer and producer with KMAP from 1966 to 1967, KLIF in 1966, and KAND from 1965 to 1966.
Dr. Colwell initially pursued an education at Southern Methodist University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1970. He continued his education a Master of Fine Arts in 1971, also at Southern Methodist University. After obtaining some experience in the field, Dr. Colwell concluded his studies with LaSalle University, where he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1988.
A respected voice in the field, Dr. Colwell has been an active leader in his community. A former member of the adjunct faculty of LaSalle University, he is a member of the Directors Guild of America, Inc., the Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Dr. Colwell has been further affiliated with the American Film Institute, Alpha Epsilon Rho, Alpha Delta Sigma, the Grand Masonic Lodge, Shriners International, and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Throughout his career, Dr. Colwell has been celebrated for his contributions. He has been the recipient of the IBA Award and four Addy Awards, as well as the Best Commercial Award by the National Association of Broadcasters.
