Dr. Donald Douglas Shillady has been recognized as professor emeritus of Virginia Commonwealth University since 2003.

With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Shillady has been recognized as professor emeritus of Virginia Commonwealth University since 2003. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor with the university from 1986 to 2003, associate professor from 1975 to 1986, and assistant professor from 1970 to 1975. He also served as an adjunct assistant professor with Randolph-Macon College for three semesters.
Dr. Shillady began his career as a student at the Drexel Institute of Technology, now known as Drexel University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1962. He continued his studies with Princeton University, where he completed a Master of Arts in physical chemistry in 1964. He then joined the University of Virginia, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry in 1970, simultaneously serving in a teaching postdoctoral fellowship with the university.
A leading voice in his community, Dr. Shillady has been active with a number of professional organizations. He was the former chairman of the Virginia section of the American Chemical Society and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi. The author, co-author and co-editor of a number of texts in his areas of expertise, he has served on multiple committees and presented at conferences and consortia. He has also published myriad papers regarding optical rotation spectroscopy, the quantum chemistry of organic compounds, and magnetic circular dichroism of lanthanide complexes and their infrared spectra.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shillady has been recognized for his contributions, including having received the Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia section of the American Chemical Society in 1992. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including the 57th edition of Who's Who in America.
