Immersed in elementary education throughout her entire career, Ms. Heap retired in 1991 from the Chula Vista Elementary School District in California after a career of more than 21 years. During her time at the Valle Lindo Elementary School and the Hazel Goes Cook Elementary School in Chula Vista Elementary School District, she taught grades, five, six and kindergarten. Ms. Heap also worked as a consultant for the bargaining team with the Chula Vista Education Association. Ms. Heap is a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Professional Women Educator's Association.
Becoming involved in various areas of education, Ms. Heap was initially inspired by a book called "Push Back the Desks" by Albert Cullum, published through MacMillan Publishing Company in 1967. Learning the power of team teaching, which really shaped her career, she also implemented Shakespeare into her classroom in an abbreviated form. Living in Japan for a little over two years, where she studied Japanese brush painting, she later included this craft into her classroom as well. Music was also a big part of Ms Heap's teaching. She was certified as a Level I Orff Schulwerk teacher. Ms. Heap was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to attend a summer Marilyn Burns Workshop at UCSD (University of California San Diego) for teachers and administrators dedicated to the improvement of math instruction in Grades K-8. Many of Ms. Heap's students were very successful in San Diego County Math Field Days.
Ms. Heap is a longstanding member of the California Retired Teachers Association, the National Science Foundation of Mathematics, the San Diego Floral Association, the Coronado Floral Association, the San Diego Horticulture Society and the Crown Garden Club of Coronado, CA. She is the former board secretary of the San Diego chapter of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, an organization of American music educators dedicated to utilizing, advancing and preserving Orff-Schulwerk, a developmental learning approach to music education that was created by composer Carl Orff and his colleague Gunild Keetman. Ms. Heap found further success as a recording secretary and the president of the Crown Garden Club.
Ms. Heap was active with numerous civic organizations throughout her career, the sole purpose of which is public education done through plant clinics, seminars, working the hotline desk and speaking engagements. Additionally, she served as a recording secretary for the University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of San Diego County and a Master Gardener volunteer for over 24 years. Ms. Heap also taught Home Gardening for the Adult Education Program in Coronado California. She was a California certified Pest Applicator for many years for the knowledge not the professional practice thereof. The recipient of an ORFF Instructional Grant, she previously accepted the We Honor Ours Award from the California Teachers Association. She was an Olympic Torch Bearer for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics; to the delight of her students, she ran on the Silver Strand along the Pacific Ocean that connects the Chula Vista area to the city of Coronado. Ms. Heap has been included in more than a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women.
Obtaining an undergraduate degree in Psychology in 1957 from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia (now the University of Mary Washington), Ms. Heap later earned her California K-8 lifetime teaching credential in 1970 from Cal Western University (now Point Loma Nazarene College) She concluded her studies with a Master of Arts in Education from Azusa Pacific University in 1978. Ms. Heap graduated from the UCCE Master Gardener Program 6 month education program in 1994.
