Prior to his retirement, he worked for Iowa State University as a Professor from 1979 to 2005, an Associate Professor from 1974 to 1979, an Assistant Professor from 1969 to 1974, and the Manager of the Computational Fluid Dynamics Center from 1984 to 2012. Earlier in his career, Dr. Tannehill excelled as a participant in the Summer Faculty Fellowship Program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the American Society for Engineering Education at the Ames Research Center from 1970 to 1971, a member of the technical staff at the Aerospace Corporation in 1967, and an aerospace engineer with the Flight Research Center for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1965.
Dr. Tannehill began his career as a student at Iowa State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1965. He continued his studies with the Iowa State University, earning a Master of Science in 1967. Dr. Tannehill concluded his education at Iowa State University in 1969, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
A leading voice in his field, Dr. Tannehill has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. A Fellow and the former Chair of the Iowa section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, he is a member of the American Society of Engineering Education, Sigma Xi, Sigma Gamma Tau, and Tau Beta Pi. Moreover, Dr. Tannehill has contributed many articles for professional journals and co-authored several books in his areas of expertise.
Throughout his career, Dr. Tannehill has received awards and honors for his contributions. He is the recipient of the Iowa General Assembly Excellence in Teaching Award, the Faculty Citation, and the Boylan Eminent Faculty Award for Research.
