In 1972, Mr. Getz earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. He went on to earn a Master of Arts from the same in 1974 and began his career as a graduate assistant in the political science department at Eastern Illinois University from 1972 to 1973. As his career progressed, he completed work as a teacher at Plano Community Unit School District 88 before becoming involved with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Office of Law Enforcement in Springfield, serving the latter organization as a conservation police officer, the region four operations supervisor, the region four commander, the deputy chief, the region two commander and the Lake Michigan enforcement operations commander. He also worked for the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators as the staged collisions project manager from 2007 to 2009 and as the program manager and lead instructor of boat accident investigations from 2003 to 2013. Mr. Getz currently works as a consultant for boat accident investigation and reconstruction.
In addition to his primary career responsibilities, Mr. Getz was a boating law administrator in the State of Illinois from 1984 to 1986, on the National Boating Safety Advisory Council for the United States Coast Guard from 1986 to 1990 and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police from 1993 to 1996. His creative contributions to his field are myriad and include "Biomechanical Assessment of Small Craft Collisions" for the Chesapeake Power Boat Symposium in 2010 and "Perception-Response Times in Recreational Boating" for the same symposium in 2014. He also wrote Illinois Public Act 84-515, Illinois Public Act 85-147 and numerous other instances of significant legislation. Mr. Getz was inducted into the Sigma Chi fraternity's Order of Constantine in 2005.
Interested in public service from a young age, Mr. Getz is passionate about the conservation of resources and the protection of the people that utilize them. His related interest in boating started with his work in law enforcement for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and he notably helped create a boating safety curriculum with the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. Due to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Getz received the United States Coast Guard Public Service Commendation in 1989. He was also the recipient of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators Award in 1989, the Illinois Conservation Police Award of Merit in 1993 and the United States Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award in 2003.
Mr. Getz served on the boat certification committee of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, and the law enforcement committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and currently belongs to the American Boat and Yacht Council, often serving in leadership and organizational positions. In light of all his accomplishments, he has been honored in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
