He went on to become a shareholder with Karon, Savikas & Horn Ltd., of counsel with Schaefer, Rosenwein & Fleming, a partner and founder of both Applegate & Valauskas and Applegate Valauskas & Rosen, and a partner and founder of Applegate Valauskas Rosen & Bernstein. He was also of counsel to Oson & Hierl Ltd. from 2000 to 2003.
Mr. Applegate has served as an officer and director of Literacy Chicago and Literacy Volunteers of Chicago. Interested in community outreach, he is currently a legal policy advisor for the Heartland Institute. A certified mediator, Mr. Applegate was admitted to practice law by the Illinois State Bar Association in 1978, going on to gain admission before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Supreme Court, and the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan.
Due to his considerable professional skill set, Mr. Applegate has contributed articles to numerous professional journals, including The American Bar Association's Landslide, Best's Insurance and the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. He has been a commentator on Fox Business News, WTTW Channel 11, CBS Channel 2 Chicago and Chicago Tribune Broadcasting's CLTV, and he was also a guest curator and contributor for "We Have Met the Funnies and They Are Us: 120 Years of American Newspaper Comic Strip Art from the Applegate-Boyle Collection" at the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts from 2014 to 2015. In 1977, Mr. Applegate received the Lewis Powell Excellence in Advocacy Award. He was also the recipient of the Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service Award from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 2001, and has been consistently named a leading lawyer in Illinois as well as an Illinois Super Lawyer since 2003.
A strong believer in the power of ideas, Mr. Applegate pursued his current profession out of an interest in testing ideas against other perspectives and life experiences. He was also interested in science and math and found that the patent area of law efficiently combined his skill sets. Celebrating a career punctuated with accomplishments, Mr. Applegate notably submitted an amicus brief to the United States Supreme Court in a case that involved overturning 40 years of union law precedent.
Interested in ongoing professional connections, Mr. Applegate is a senior fellow with the Litigation Counsel of America and a founding member of the Intellectual Property Institute. He also belongs to the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago and the Richard Linn American Inn of Court, and is a former president of the Chicago Lincoln American Inn of Court. Mr. Applegate is an active member of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies, along with numerous professional bar associations.
