A nationally and locally acclaimed artist and educator, Ms. Meeker was inspired to pursue a career in art by her family's creativity, particularly that of her mother, grandfather and uncle. Her uncle was an accomplished photographer and designer, who worked designing machinery and completed beautiful woodworking, including miniature furniture. Earning a Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University in 1952, Ms. Meeker has cultivated her skills as an artist throughout her life and has completed advanced study with over 20 nationally known artists.
Embarking on her career as an art teacher immediately after graduation, Ms. Meeker worked with the School City of Hammond in Indiana from 1952 to 1957. Founding B&B Designs with her husband, Bill Meeker, in 1958, she joined Purdue University Northwest in Hammond, IN, as a faculty member in the architectural technology department in 1965. Progressing to the role of associate professor in 1979, she also worked as the coordinator of the art gallery from 1976 to 1986. Upon her retirement from Purdue University Northwest in 1986, Ms. Meeker was recognized as a professor emerita for her exemplary service.

Everything she loves and is passionate about have inspired the entirety of what she has created over the long years of her life. Featured in numerous solos and group exhibitions at galleries across the country, she maintains affiliation with the NIAA Gift Gallery in Munster, IN, and the Steeple Gallery in St. John, IN. Although she is retired, Ms. Meeker continues to mentor art students and inspire others to pursue careers in the arts. She has always felt that the most gratifying aspect of her work has been receiving feedback from her students. Knowing she has been able to make a difference in their lives is a gift like nothing else. In this light, she has donated her time to ArtMix, formerly Very Special Arts Indiana, a non-profit organization that aims to provide people of all ages and abilities with the skills to engage with art as a means of creative self-expression and growth. Impressively, Ms. Meeker also offers the Barbara Miller Meeker Art Scholarship through the Legacy Foundation to graduating seniors who are planning to pursue a career in the visual arts or architecture.
The recipient of a number of honors and accolades over the course of her career, Ms. Meeker was presented with two awards from the Art Competition in Chesterton, IN, in 2004, having previously won awards at this competition in 1998, 1994, 1992 and 1990. Receiving various prizes at juried national and regional art exhibitions, she was notably recognized with the Second Prize and the Purchase Prize by the Artists Guild Chicago in 1980 and the Jury Prize by the Hoosier Salon in 1983. Her painting "Lily" was also chosen for the National Easter Seal in 1993. Additionally, Ms. Meeker's art has appeared in several publications, including "The Complete Guide to Creative Watercolor" by Miles Batt in 1988 and "A Grand Tradition: The Art and Artists of the Hoosier Salon, 1925-1990" in 1993, among others.
