Over the years, he has conducted his research in the control of Hybrid Electric Vehicles, "exergy" based controller design of energy systems, easily verifiable controller design for automotive systems, the control and optimization of high efficiency engines, and the optimization and calibration of automotive powertrain systems. The results of Dr. Shahbakhti's work with other industry scholars recently led to grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy. His research results are published in over 140 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications,
Earlier in his career, Dr. Shahbakhti found success through his affiliation with the ARAS Robotics Team in Tehran, Iran, where he served as a research and development engineer. He further excelled in a number of positions for the IranKhodro Powertrain Company, the University of Alberta and the University of California, Berkeley. An expert in his field, Dr. Shahbakhti earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in mechanical engineering from K.N. Toosi University of Technology as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shahbakhti's publications have been cited more than 1750 times. For his outstanding accomplishments, he has been celebrated many times, having been presented with a Best Paper Award from the automotive and transportation systems technical committee of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award through SAE International, the Zita and John Rosen Teaching Excellence Award for Principal Instructor from the University of Alberta and a Best Paper Award through the Third International Conference on Internal Combustion Engines, just to name a few. Looking toward the future, Dr. Shahbakhti would like to be considered an expert for providing innovative solutions for control and optimization of "connected energy systems," including vehicles, buildings and renewable energy systems, and power electric grids.
