He has served as a member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Plasticity, International Journal of Mulitiscale Computational Engineering, NPJ Computational Materials, and others, and is the co-editor of the International Journal of Fatigue. He has authored or co-authored more than 330 articles in professional journals.
An active leader in the research communities of mechanics of materials and computational materials science, Dr. McDowell has served as President of the Society of Engineering Science, Inc., and is a fellow of the SES, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASM International, and the American Academy of Mechanics. He is a member of the Materials Research Society, the American Society for Engineering Education and the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society.
Several noteworthy career achievement awards have been bestowed on Dr. McDowell, including the Khan International Medal for contributions to the field of Plasticity, the Nadai Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Fatigue. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
