Earlier in his career, Dr. Keenan was a senior fellow at King's College in Cambridge, England, from 1970 to 1974.
Dr. Keenan began his career as a student at Swarthmore College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and religion in 1959. He then joined Paris-Sorbonne University, receiving a Diploma in literature in 1961 and a certificate in French literature in 1962. He continued his studies with George Washington University, completing a Master of Arts in linguistics in 1966. Dr. Keenan concluded his education with the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in linguistics in 1969.
A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Keenan has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Linguistic Society of America, and the American Mathematical Society. A contributor of articles to professional journals, he has written and edited several books in his areas of expertise.
