With more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Dorfman has been chief scientist and chief executive officer at Atomic Scale Design since 1994, a company which was formed as Strategic Materials and Technologies in 1992 on Long Island, NY, and relocated to San Francisco, CA, in 1997. While remaining at this post, he joined the Advanced Refractory Technology as the senior scientific consultant from 1992 to 1993 and was laboratory head at Moltech Corporation in 1991. Earlier in his career, he was laboratory head for solid state physics and technology for new computer generations at the Institute of Electronic Control Machines from 1966 to 1990, having been a scientist with the institute from 1961 to 1966.
Dr. Dorfman has received a Doctor of Science in microelectronics from the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technique, a Doctor of Science in physics from the Institute of Semiconductors Physics of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Electronic Controlling Machines in Russia, and a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry from the Moscow Institute of Fine Chemistry. He worked and continuously conducted his researches and development from 1961 to the last days before his departure to the U.S.A. in 1991 in the Institute of Electronic Controlling Machines in Russia (now known as the I.S. Brook Institute).
In addition to his work in the field, Dr. Dorfman has held a number of academic positions. He has served as a professor with Farmingdale State College, the Polytechnic Institute of New York, Stony Brook University and Clarkson University, and he was a visiting scientist with the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The author of numerous texts and contributor of articles to professional journals, he is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and a lifetime member of the International Academy of Authors of Scientific Discoveries and Inventions, through which he received an Honorary Medal in 2000.
Throughout his career, Dr. Dorfman has been recognized for his contributions. He received the Grand Prize at the First International Nanotechnology Contest in Japan in 2003, and the Government of the USSR gave him a Gold Medal for Best Technological Achievement in 1989 and the Gold Medal for Distinguished Labor in 1970. A frequent grantee in his field, he has been featured in numerous honors publications, including the 57th and 58th editions of Who's Who in America.
