Interested in writing from a young age, Ms. Burnham earned a Bachelor of Arts, in Italian language & literature cum laude, from Smith College in 1958. Her first job was as a typist at the Smithsonian Institution, where, before leaving five years later, she wrote the first book on the exhibits ever published by the Smithsonian, and produced and directed three films. Moving in 1965 to New York with her husband and little baby, she began freelancing and has published over the years, sometimes as a contributing editor, in such places as the New York Times Magazine, the Washington Post, Esquire, Town and Country Magazine, The Reader's Digest of Japan, New Art Examiner, Redbook, Ladies Home Journal, Museum and Arts/Washington and New Woman Magazine. In 1973 her first bestselling book, The Art Crowd, an investigation into corruption in the New York contemporary art world was published. From 1971 to 1973 she worked as an acquisitions editor for David McKay, Inc. and then took no other jobs until from 1992 to 1996, Ms. Burnham worked as executive director for the Fund for New American Plays at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, serving directly with famed Broadway producer Roger Stevens to give money to theaters to produce new plays.
Exhibiting a wide variety of skills, Ms. Burnham is a speaker in her field, as well as an author, playwright and now, following a long spiritual journey, a psychic and medium. Her nonfiction books are: "The Art Crowd, "The Landed Gentry," "For Writers Only," "The Ecstatic Journey: The Transforming Power of Mystical Experience," "The Art of Intuition," and "The Path of Prayer," the last being named one of the best 50 books of the year. Along with her creative contributions to literature, Ms. Burnham was a founding member of The Studio Theatre in Washington and of the District of Columbia Community Humanities Council, the regranting arm of the National Endowment for the Humanities in D.C She is the recipient of numerous awards for her books and plays, including her favorite, "Daughter of Mark Twain," Communications Arts Magazine's Award of Excellence, the Women's Theatre Award and the District of Columbia Arts and Humanities Council's Public Humanities Award, the Virginia Duvall Mann Award for her play "Snowstorms," and several for her feminist play that retells the Odyssey, "Penelope." Ms. Burnham's essays are found in several anthologies. Her books and essays been translated into more than 20 languages. She is an active member of the Cosmos Club in Washington DC, where she plays on the chess team.
