As a longtime marketing, communications and design consultant, and a leader in his field, Mr. Seigel also founded Siegel+Gale Inc., where he served as chairman and chief executive officer from 1969 to 2011. Some of the companies he has designed for over the years include Xerox, American Express, Caterpillar, 3M, the Girl Scouts, the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), The Rockefeller Group, MasterCard, Prudential, United Health, Harley Davidson, The College Board, Mount Sinai Medical Center, AARP, the US Air Force and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, among dozens of other recognizable brands.
Mr. Siegel helped pioneer the Plain English movement in business and government in the early 1970s, was an adjunct associate professor at Fordham University School of Law in New York City, where he taught a ground-breaking course on Writing Contracts in Plain English, and as an adjunct associate professor and co-director of the Communications Design Center at Carnegie Mellon University. He has also served on the executive committee for the Document Design Project at the National Institute of Education and was Chairman of the Advisory Board of the College of Architecture, Arts and Planning at Cornell University. Prior to forming his first business, Mr. Siegel worked as an account executive for Sandgren and Murtha, Inc., a corporate identity firm; Rudder Finn, Inc., a public relations firm; and as an account executive and secretary for the new products development group at Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn (BBDO), a leading advertising agency, between 1964 and 1969.
The co-author of several books, including "Simple: Conquering the Crisis of Complexity" (2013), "Writing Contracts in Plain English" (1981), "The Wall Street Journal Guide to Money and Markets" (1989), "The Wall Street Journal Guide to Personal Finance" (1992), "The Wall Street Journal Guide to Understanding Money and Investments" (1993), "The Wall Street Journal Guide to Understanding Taxes" (1994) and by contributing articles to many professional journals. His new book, "Voice Lessons," will be released in 2019. In addition to his writings, Mr. Siegel's Ted Talk on Simplification has been viewed by over a million people.
Mr. Siegel is a member of the Authors Guild, the University Club of New York, NationSwell, and The Paley Center for Media. He has served on numerous boards including The Legal Aid Society of NYC, the International Center of Photography, the Museum of Modern Art (Photography Department), John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the American Theater Wing (TONY Awards), the Nathaniel Wharton Fund for Research and Education in Brain, Body and Behavior, and Common Good.
Honored numerous times throughout his career, Mr. Siegel recently received Transform Awards in both 2016 and 2018. He also received Design Value Awards from the Design Management Institute in 2012, 2015 and 2018. He was recognized by the City of New York for Contributions to the City in 2013. Other awards include the Rebrand 100 Award, 2009; the GCS Education Award, 2011; the Lupus Foundation Visionary Award, 2015; the Legal Aid Society Award, 2009; Museum of Arts & Design Visionary Award, 2008; and the Girl Scouts Leadership Award, 2014. He has notably been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
First acquiring a Bachelor of Science from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University in 1960 where he was a member of the ROTC (1956 to 1960), Mr. Siegel then attended New York University School of Law in 1961. After serving as a first lieutenant in the United States Army in an 8" Howitzer Battalion stationed in Germany, between 1961 and 1962, he continued his education at Alexey Brodovitch's Design Laboratory and the New School for Social Research.
Born in New York City, Mr. Siegel married Gloria Fern Mendel in 1965 and recently celebrated their 53rd Wedding Anniversary. He is the proud father of one child, Stacey Siegel, and grandfather of two, Leo Bloom and Ruby Bloom.
Among his many interests, Mr. Siegel enjoys playing tennis, rowing, ocean swimming, theatre, music, dance, art, and is a distinguished collector of photography. He curated his collection for a show at the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University that was developed into the book, "One Man's Eye," published by Abrams. He also curated a photography show at the International Center of Photography highlighting the circus photography of Edward J. Kelty that was also developed into a book, "Step Right This Way," published by Barnes & Noble.
