With more than 25 years of professional experience, Ms. Smith was a hematology technician with Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD, from 1973 to 1993. Prior to obtaining this role, she was a hematology technician at North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie from 1972 to 1973. She started her career at Duke University Medical Center in 1966 leaving in 1972, where she served as a representative on the Employees Council from 1968 to 1972. She attended Penn Hall Junior College where she earned an Associate of Science in 1965.
A respected voice in her community, she has been a member of the Charles County Historical Society since 1975, Director of the William Smallwood Foundation since 1997, member of the Charles County Garden Club since 1997 and a member of the Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco since 1975 and served as a Director from 1997 to 2017. She also served as a docent/historian/director at the Port Tobacco Village and reconstructed Courthouse from 1997 to 2018.
Ms. Smith has been recognized and awarded for her achievements. As a member of the Charles County Garden Club, she received the Mrs. Frank J. Fletcher Award, 2007 and 2016, presented to a member for "outstanding contributions in the field of historic or environmental preservation." In 2007, she was the recipient of the Charles County Historic Trust Preservation Award. In 2017, the Directors of the Society for Restoration of Port Tobacco recognized her contributions to the society as member, docent, director, and "historian."
She has been featured and quoted in numerous publications related to the Port Tobacco Village and Courthouse, such as "The Road to Religion" by Matthew H. Brown for his story about the "Religious Freedom By Way," as published in the Baltimore sun and Chicago Tribune (May 2010), and honors publications including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in America. She was also recognized with awards for sportsmanship in high school and college.
Some of her hobbies include: gardening, travel and needlepoint, the latter for which Ms. Smith has won Best in Shows and Blue Ribbons. Her needle work includes: the Rector's Chair in Christ Church Port Tobacco Parish and Altar Rail Kneeler R6 both donated and stitched by Ms. Smith and Altar Rail Kneeler L1 stitched by Ms. Smith; stitcher for kneeler "The Ark and Dove" at St. Ignatius Church, Port Tobacco, Maryland.
