After accruing more than 30 yeas of practiced legal experience, Mr. Hoffman retired from his role as partner with Shearman & Sterling, where he began his career as an associate in 1960. Since his retirement, he has taken a special interest in preserving open space in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, having placed his 800-acre certified tree farm under conservation easements with the New Hampshire Forest Society. During his spare time, Mr. Hoffman has dedicated his efforts to his community through a plethora of organizations, including Monadnock United Way, the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, and the Cheshire Medical Center.
One of the highlights of Mr. Hoffman's career was the success of Iranian hostage negotiations and the transaction his firm helped to stitch together, which ended up freeing the hostages by using Iran's own money. Upon its success, he co-authored, with former Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, a book on the historic moment called "American Hostages in Iran: The Conduct of a Crisis." A former first lieutenant in the United States Army, Mr. Hoffman obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Harvard University.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Mr. Hoffman has been affiliated with the American College of Trial Lawyers, through which he is a fellow. For his outstanding accomplishments, he has honored with features in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in American Law, and various other honors including The Granite State Award for Outstanding Community Service from the University of New Hampshire, Citizen of the Year in Keene, NH, and the Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence, which he earned in 2018. In the coming years, Mr. Hoffman intends to continue enjoying his retirement while giving back to his community.
