Ms. Hughes began her career as a student at the University of Chile, receiving an Associate of Arts in English as a second language in 1968. She then relocated to the United States, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Western College in 1969. She continued her studies with American University, completing a Master of Arts in Spanish in 1972. She later earned a doctorate, all but dissertation, in Spanish literature and education from Catholic University in 1976.
Throughout her career, Ms. Hughes has been recognized for her achievements. She has also received awards and accolades for her contributions and accomplishments. She was featured in numerous honors publications, including the 24th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
