Prior to this role, he excelled as the Farnsworth professor of international agricultural policy and economics at Stanford University from 1972 to 2002, where he also served as the co-director of the Center of Environmental Science and Policy from 1999 to 2005, the director of the Freeman Spogli Institute of International Studies from 1991 to 1998, and the director of the Food Research Institute from 1972 to 1991. Earlier in his career, Dr. Falcon found success as a lecturer and the deputy director of the development advisory services at Harvard University from 1968 to 1972.
Dr. Falcon initially pursued an education at Iowa State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1958. He then concluded his studies at Harvard University, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962. A respected voice in his field, he has co-authored multiple texts and contributed articles to professional journals. Dr. Falcon has also been a senior advisor the government of Indonesia from 1968 to 2009.
An active leader in his community, Dr. Falcon has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the American Economic Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Association of Agricultural Economists. He was also a former member of the presidential committee on world hunger, Dr. Falcon was active as the chair of the International Rice Research Institute, the International Wheat and Maize Improvement Center, and the Agricultural Development Council.
Throughout his career, Dr. Falcon has been recognized for his accomplishments in helping to alleviate global hunger. The recipient of a Distinguished Achievement Citation Award from Iowa State University, he was also presented with a First-Order Merit Medal from the government of Indonesia. Dr. Falcon has been featured in numerous publications, including Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education. He and his wife of 62 years, Laura, now split their time between Stanford and their farm in Iowa.
