Over the years, he gained valuable expertise in marketing and education with Tata Oil Mills in Mumbai, India, as a marketing researcher from 1959 to 1964, Delhi Cloth Mills in Delhi, India, as an executive from 1965 to 1966, and the Indian Institute of Management in Kolkata, India, as an assistant professor from 1966 to 1967. In a career filled with highlights, he is especially proud of two of his Ph.D. students: Irene Rosenfeld, a former chief operations officer at Mondelēz International, Inc., and Professor K. Sudhir, a James L. Frank professor of marketing, private enterprise and management at Yale University.
An expert in his field, Dr. Rao holds a Master of Science from the University of Mumbai, a Master of Arts from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with the American Marketing Association and the North American Society for Marketing Education in India, where he has served as president since 1999. Utilizing his vast array of knowledge, he authored such books as "Applied MDS," "Decision Criteria for New Product Acceptance and Success" and "Applied Conjoint Analysis."
In light of his outstanding work in the field, Dr. Rao won a plethora of awards, including a Faculty Research Award from Cornell University, the Robert D. Buzzell Best Paper Award from the Marketing Science Institute, the Charles Coolidge Parlin Marketing Research Award from the American Marketing Association, and the William Davidson Award from The Journal of Retailing. Most recently, he was the recipient of a Ziegel Award in 2016 and a Churchill Award in 2017. Additionally, he was deemed a fellow of the INFORMS Society for Marketing Science and the American Marketing Association. Looking toward the future, Dr. Rao intends to experience the continued success of his career with Cornell University.
