A retired physicist, Dr. Broadfoot initially began his career as an engineer with the Defense Research Board in Ottawa, Canada, between 1956 and 1958. Upon earning advanced degrees, he was later hired to work at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson, Arizona, in 1963 as a junior physicist in the space division. Remaining with the organization for 15 years, he also served as an assistant physicist, associate physicist and physicist. In 1979, Dr. Broadfoot became a research scientist and associate physicist at the Space Engineering Research Center at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Then in 1982, Dr. Broadfoot was hired by the University of Arizona in Tucson as a senior research scientist in the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, where he remained for 21 years before retiring in 2003.
Making many discoveries and advances in his career over the years, Dr. Broadfoot was responsible for flying the first ever EUV spectrometer to every planet but Earth, Mars and Pluto. He also discovered the auroras on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and determined the vertical profiles of atmospheric density and composition for Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Titan and Triton by occultation. Enjoying many great opportunities while working in his field, Dr. Broadfoot is especially fond of the time he spent with NASA working on the Voyager program.
For excellence in his career, Dr. Broadfoot has received multiple awards from NASA, including several Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medals and Group Achievement Awards for Voyager science instrument development and for Voyager science investigations. He has also been recognized with Group Achievement Awards for the Galileo Gaspra encounter team and the Galileo Ida encounter/Dactyl discovery team. In light of all his accomplishments, he has previously been multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Broadfoot earned a Bachelor of Engineering in engineering and physics at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, in 1956. Following this achievement, he continued his studies at the University of Saskatchewan, where he obtained a Master of Science in physics in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1963. Born in Milestone, Saskatchewan, Canada, he made his way to the United States in 1963, just after earning his doctorate degree. Happily married to his wife, Katherine Eileen Deacon, for many years, Dr. Broadfoot is the proud father of two children.
