Mr. Currivan initially earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Cornell University, graduating with distinction. He went on to earn two Masters of Science – one in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, as well as one in aeronautical systems from the University of West Florida. He served as a flight instructor in the U.S. Navy's Advanced Jet Training Command. He then attended Cornell Law School, where he worked as note and comment editor of the Cornell Law Review, and graduated summa cum laude with a Doctor of Law in 1978. He was admitted to the Ohio State Bar the same year. Commencing his legal career in the Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps, he served as prosecutor, chief prosecutor, and head of military justice at the Naval Legal Services Office in Norfolk, Virginia; as senior attorney aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz; and as trial judge at the Norfolk Naval Base. He then began his civilian career as a tax attorney for Jones Day in Cleveland, OH in 1984.
As his career progressed, Mr. Currivan became a partner with Jones Day, as well as coordinator of the Cleveland Branch Tax Practice, also serving of counsel from 2011 to 2012. He was appointed as a commissioner for the Planning and Zoning Commission of the City of Sedona in 2014, and in 2016 he was elected to the Sedona City Council, where he currently serves.
In addition to his primary professional accomplishments, Mr. Currivan worked as adjunct professor of law at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law from 1997 to 2003 and as chairman of the Cleveland Tax Institute in 2005. He notably won the Federal Bar Association's Younger Federal Lawyer Award in 1981. Celebrated for significant professional innovation, Mr. Currivan impressively invented a warning circuit for military aircraft as well as a database management program for the Norfolk Naval Legal Services Office.
Knowledgeable in his field, Mr. Currivan co-wrote "Ohio Limited Liability Companies" in 1999. In addition to his contributions to the legal arena, he also served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1984, attaining the rank of commander. Interested in maintaining academic as well as professional connections, Mr. Currivan belongs to the Order of the Coif, the Tau Beta Pi Association, Inc., Eta Kappa Nu, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
