Since 2000, Dr. Aref has excelled as the chief of radiation oncology at the Saint John Hospital and Medical Center. Previously working at Wayne State University School of Medicine for eight years, where he held the post of an assistant professor of radiation oncology, a residency program director of radiation oncology, an associate professor of radiation oncology and an associate specialist-in-chief on radiation oncology between 1992 and 2000, he also served as a teacher at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Alberta and the University of Missouri between 1983 and 1992. In addition to his role as chief, Dr. Aref currently holds appointments at the Saint John River District Hospital, the Saint John Oakland Hospital, Holy Cross Saratoga Hospital, the Saint John Detroit Riverview Hospital and the Saint John Macomb Hospital.
Prior to his present position, Dr. Aref served as the chief of radiation oncology at Van Elslander Cancer Center in 1999. He also found success as a radiation oncologist for the Detroit Medical Center from 1992 to 2000. Furthermore, Dr. Aref operated out of his private practice in Evansville, Ind. from 1985 to 1991.
A member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Radiation Oncology and the European Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, Dr. Aref has also been actively involved with numerous other organizations and committees. He additionally contributed on the committee on radiation oncology for the World Health Organization, the senior leadership committee for the Radiation Oncology Center and the program director's committee for Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center, among others. Since 1999, Dr. Aref has also provided his time and resources as a member of the item-writing task force on re-certification examination for the American Board of Radiology.
The recipient of several grants since 1996, Dr. Aref more recently accepted a U.S. Department of Defense grant from 2000 to 2005 in the amount of $750,000 as the co-principal investigator. He has authored or co-authored over 40 articles published in various scholarly journals. Presented with a Karmanos Cancer Institute Performance Recognition Award in 1997, he has also been recognized among America's Top Physicians by Consumers Research Council of America and the Best Doctors in America by Hour Magazine. Furthermore, Dr. Aref has been selected for inclusion in the 66th edition of Who's Who in America.
Obtaining a scholarship for his medical school training, Dr. Aref pursued an education at Cairo University, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1976. Upon graduating, he completed his residency in radiation oncology between 1978 and 1982 and a fellowship in radiation oncology between 1982 and 1983 at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Licensed to practice medicine in Michigan, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, Dr. Aref is board certified through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Radiology.
