Dr. Shah is a urologist who has practiced in the Washington, D.C. Metro area since 1975. Presently, he is medical education director of MidAtlantic Urology Associates since 2010 and CEO of American Professional Exchange Association. In the past, he had several leadership positions in various hospitals and medical societies. He was president, medical staff and board member (2003 to 2005), president-elect (2001 to 2003), chairman in the department of surgery (1999 to 2001), and chief of urology (1995 to 1999) of Doctors Community Hospital at Lanham in Maryland. Additionally, he had the title of chairman in the department of surgery (1990 to 1993) at Leland Memorial Hospital in Riverdale, MD.

Chairman of the peer reviews committee at Prince George's County Medical Society (1992 to 1999), Dr. Shah also acted as member of the Maryland State Peer Review Management Committee (1994 to 2001), president of the International Medical Graduate Section (1998 to 2001), trustee of Maryland State Medical Society (2002 to 2005), and delegate of Maryland State Medical Society (1998 to 2007). He has excelled as the co-founder, former president and trustee of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin since 1982, chairman of American College of International Medical Graduates (1988 to 1990), chairman of International Association of American Physicians (1985 to 1990), and president of Association of Indian Urologist of North America (1982 to 1984).

Dr. Shah immigrated to the U.S. in 1971. Prior to that, he was assistant professor of surgery and attending surgeon at B.J. Medical College and University of Poona (India) (1966 to 1971). In 1971, Dr. Shah's article on prostate and hernia was published as lead article with an editorial by Professor Dr. Nyhus in Archives of Surgery (U.S. Surgery Journal). 1980 and onward, Dr. Shah has carried out multiple projects in India to improve medical education and health care with the U.S. medical expertise. He has lead multiple delegations and met with all the Prime Ministers and Health Ministers, on an annual basis for these projects.

As the president of AAPI, Dr. Shah led fight for discrimination against foreign medical graduates (FMG) and to gain equality with American Medical Graduates (AMG) from 1984 to 1990. He helped introduce needed bills in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate, testified at various House and Senate committees, and finally in 1990 President George W. Bush signed the bill into law to assure nondiscrimination equality to International Medical Graduates (IMG). On this subject, a book titled Fight for Equality was written by Shawn McMahon in 2005.

Dr. Shah for four years reviewed urology textbooks for JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association).

In the past five years, Dr. Shah has been actively involved in promotion of prostate cancer screenings. In 2012, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) decided that there was no need to screen for prostate cancer. However, in the past 20 years prior to 2012, due to prostate cancer screening, prostate mortality was decreased by 50%. Confronting the American Urology Association and USPSTF, Dr. Shah helped introduce a bill in the House and in the Senate to avail prostate cancer screening especially to healthy men 70 years and older. Dr. Shah is still working to get availability of prostate cancer screening in men 70 years and older. The Washington Post prominently printed Dr. Shah's interview on prostate cancer screening on January 8, 2019.

Honored with multiple awards, Dr. Shah accepted Distinguished Physician Leadership Award from AAPI and ACIP, Person of the Year Award from India Abroad (news weekly) and Gandhi Award from India Tribune (news weekly). He has been featured in the 8th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 54th and 55th editions of Who's Who in America. In the past four years, Dr. Shah has also published five papers and six letters to the editor in the U.S. urology journals to favor prostate cancer screening.

Dr. Shah notably pursued education in B.J. Medical College earning Doctor of Medicine in 1960 and Master of Surgery in 1964. He then completed residencies at B.J. Medical College from 1966 to 1971, St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, Ohio from 1971 to 1972 and Washington Hospital Center from 1972 to 1975. Dr. Shah has since become a diplomate of the American Board of Urology and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Revised Physician.
