With nearly five decades of professional experience to his credit, John Carver Edwards, Ph.D. (Emeritus) retired from the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens in 2000. Dr. Edwards' departure followed his work as Special Projects Archivist at UGA from 1993 to 2000, where he was previously University Archivist from 1977 to 1993. Combined with this endeavor, Dr. Edwards also served as Official Archivist for The Ecological Society of America, a campus-based collection, from 1983 to 2000. It was at the University of Georgia that he held the beginning position of Records Officer from 1972 to 1977. The first role of his professional career was as Head of the Manuscript Division in the Georgia Department of Archives and History in Atlanta from 1970 to 1972.
Before beginning his career, Dr. Edwards began his pursuit of an advanced education at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1854. He graduated from Wofford with honors in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts. He continued his academic studies at the University of Georgia and earned a Master of Arts in 1966. Resuming his learning experience at the same academic institution, he graduated in 1975 with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in history. Beyond these qualifications, he was accepted as a charter member of the Academy of Certified Archivists, a nonprofit organization that works to certify professional archivists. He also holds membership in the Society of American Archivists, founded in 1936.
Additionally, he has maintained memberships as an associate of such honorary and prestigious organizations as the Delta Tau Kappa International Social Science Honor Society, Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences, Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the League of WWI Aviation Historians. In light of his exceptional undertakings throughout his career, Dr. Edwards has accrued several honors and accolades, including the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 and a commendation from Library Journal for 22 years of service. UGA Presidential Emeritus status was conferred to Dr. Edwards on August 16, 2000. Moreover, he received a citation from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps WWII Commemorative Committee for his programs and exhibits celebrating the 50th Anniversary of WWII.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, on December 8, 1939, Dr. Edwards married Judith Brina Task in January of 2002. He is blessed with two children by a previous marriage, Leigh Edwards Davis and John Spann Edwards, as well as two stepsons, Kelly Harris Quinlan and Liam Morgan Quinlan, and two grandchildren.
His career-related contributions include serving as program co-director, exhibit preparator and conference organizer of Archives and Records Management/Viable Partnership, University of Georgia Bicentennial Observance, 1985; A Memorial Day Salute to Denmark Groover: Georgia's Black Sheep Squadron 214/WWII, 1987; All Blood Runs Red: The Life of Gene Bullard, America's First Black Fighter Pilot, Columbus Georgia Native, WWI, 1989; and Deliver Them From Evil: A Commemoration of America's Role in the Global War Against Fascism, 1941-1945, 1994. He has been a regular history and biography book reviewer for Library Journal in New York City since 1996.
His creative works include authoring the following books: Patriots in Pinstripe: Men of the National Security League, 1982; Berlin Calling: American Broadcasters in Service to the Third Reich, 1991; Airmen Without Portfolio: U.S. Mercenaries in Civil War Spain, 1997; Flying for Orville: Howard Rinehart's Life of Adventure, 2004; and Orville's Aviators: Outstanding Alumni of the Wright Flying School, 1910-1916, 2009. In addition, he contributed five essays in the Encyclopedia of World War I; two one-hour radio broadcasts of Berlin Calling for the National Public Radio, which received Best Documentary Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, The Public Radio News Directors Inc. and Georgia Association of Broadcasters in 1994; and Flyers of Fortune with National Public Radio, which received an Honorable Mention Award in 1999. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Edwards has also authored 32 academic articles in 25 professional publications.
