With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Ms. Pruitt was a vocal music teacher with McAlester Public Schools from 1985 to 2006. Prior to obtaining this role, she was a vocal music teacher at Haileyville Public Schools from 1978 to 1984 and Stuart Public Schools from 1977 to 1978. Earlier in her career, she was a private preschool teacher from 1974 to 1976 and a director of vocal music at Crowder Public Schools from 1968 to 1973. Since 2018, she has been a member of the McAlester Arts and Humanities Council, having formerly served as a community choir member in various cities throughout the state of Oklahoma. In the late 1960s, she also founded and directed the Children's Bell Choir and the Adult Bell Choir in the First Presbyterian Church of McAlester, OK. Additionally, she founded the Emerson Honor Children's Choir, which existed for nearly 15 years, a highlight of her career.
Ms. Pruitt began her career as a student at Eastern Oklahoma State College, obtaining an Associate of Arts in vocal music education in 1965. She continued her studies with Southeastern Oklahoma State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in vocal music education in 1968.
A respected voice in her industry, Ms. Pruitt has been active with a number of organizations in her community. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Oklahoma Music Educators Association, the Upsilon chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association. She has also been affiliated with the American Choral Directors Association, the Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association and Beta Sigma Phi.
Throughout her career, Ms. Pruitt has been recognized for her contributions, including having won the Flying Buffalo Award from McAlester Public Schools. Her choirs were the recipients of the Choral Superior Sweepstakes Awards from 2001 to 2004, and her students received superior ratings at the district and state levels throughout her tenure.
