With more than 60 years of professional experience, Dr. Jackson has worked as an independent consultant since 1995, as well as a professor at the University of Hawai'i since 1975. In addition to his primary roles, he served as a dean with the school from 1983 to 1995, and as the chair of the interdisciplinary program in communication and information sciences from 1985 to 1989. Prior to obtaining these positions, Dr. Jackson excelled as an associate professor with the State University of New York, Geneseo, from 1969 to 1975, the chief librarian at Atlanta University's Trevor Arnett Library from 1964 to 1969, and a territorial librarian of American Samoa from 1962 to 1964. In 1969-1969 he was a Visiting Scholar under the U.S. State Department's Fulbright Program to the University of Tehran, Iran.
From 1958 to 1962, Dr. Jackson was an assistant professor of library science with the C.P. Huntington Memorial Library at Hampton University. Previously, he found success with the same establishment as a librarian from 1959 to 1962 and a acting librarian from 1958 to 1959. Earlier in his career, Dr. Jackson was active as a branch librarian with the Free Library of Philadelphia from 1955 to 1958.
Dr. Jackson began his career as a student at Virginia Union University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1955. He continued his studies with Drexel University, earning a Master of Science in 1956. He then enrolled at Indiana University, where he completed postgraduate coursework from 1961 to 1964. Dr. Jackson concluded his education in 1974, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in communication from Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Communication.
A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Jackson has held a number of leadership positions in his community. The former president of the Association for Library and Information Science Education, he had maintained involvement as the chair of the International Relations Roundtable for the American Library Association. Likewise, Dr. Jackson is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
Throughout his career, Dr. Jackson has been honored for his contributions. Virginia Union University recognized him as an Outstanding Alumnus, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and he accepted a Martin Luther King Jr. Award from the Friends of Civil Rights. He has published five books and more than 50 articles. Dr. Jackson has been featured in numerous publications as well, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the West.
