With more than 30 years of professional experience, Ms. Ramirez retired in 1997, having been a bilingual instructional coordinator for the Austin Independent School District since 1996. Prior to obtaining this role, she was an assistant principal with the district from 1991 to 1996, an instruction coordinator from 1989 to 1991, the coordinator of the bilingual program from 1974 to 1989, and an elementary teacher from 1969 to 1974. Earlier in her career, Ms. Ramirez was an elementary teacher with the Edgewood Independent School District from 1966 to 1969. Notably, she was one of the teachers who started the Bilingual Education Program at Edgewood Independent School District in 1968 after being selected to attend an eight-week summer Bilingual Institute sponsored by the Texas Education Agency and the University of Texas at Austin Texas under the direction of Dr. Theodore Anderson and team.
Ms. Ramirez began her career as a student at the University of the Incarnate Word, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. After obtaining some experience in the industry, she returned to her studies, earning a Master of Education with the University of Texas in 1979 and completing postgraduate work with Texas State University in 1980. Ms. Ramirez is certified as a bilingual and elementary teacher and a supervisor, and she is certified in liturgy and as a catechist master teacher by the Diocese of Austin.
A respected voice in her community, Ms. Ramirez has been an active leader with a number of organizations. She was the director of Spanish Mass Choir at St. Mary's Cathedral, a liturgist, session coordinator, and bilingual catechist with Cristo Rey Catholic Church, and a volunteer interpreter with the Diocesan Law Project with the Catholic Church of Central Texas. Ms. Ramirez has been a volunteer with the Diocesan Choir for 20 years. She was elected by the community to serve in the 1970s as a member in the Austin Model City Commission and was also elected as a neighborhood representative and to the Metz Recreation Center Board.
Throughout her career, Ms. Ramirez has been recognized for her achievements. She received certificates of appreciation for lifetime services to Cristo Rey Church in 1981 and in 2009 to the present. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
