With over fifty years of experience in physics, Dr. Semon has held the title of professor emeritus of physics at Bates College, in Lewiston ME, since 2017. He started as an assistant professor of physics at Bates in 1976, was promoted to associate professor in 1983 and to full professor in 1989. Before Dr. Semon began working at Bates he was a research assistant in the solar division at Kitt Peak National Observatory in 1970 and a research assistant in the division of field testing of nuclear weapons at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in 1974.
Dr. Semon has worked in a variety of subfields in mathematical and theoretical physics, including non-relativistic quantum mechanics, classical and quantum electrodynamics, phase transitions, special relativity, forensic accident reconstruction, and the physics of sports. Working with various co-authors Dr. Semon developed a new equation of state for liquid/gas systems near a critical point, an alternative formulation of quantum electrodynamics, a simplified derivation of Thomas Precession and an updated discussion of its experimental confirmations. He also helped develop a dynamical approach to the Aharonov-Bohm effect, an alternative interpretation of the classical electromagnetic vector potential, and a relativistic velocity space in special relativity. Earlier in his career, Dr. Semon focused on non-relativistic quantum scattering theory and published several papers dealing with scattering from Coulomb and screened Coulomb potentials.
Dr. Semon was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Mu Epsilon, and the Society of Woodrow Wilson Fellows. He is a member of the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Academy of Forensic Scientists and the American College of Forensic Examiners. He graduated from Colgate University Magna Cum Laude, in 1971, with a double major in mathematics and physics. He received an M. S. in 1973 and a Ph. D in 1976, both in Physics, from the University of Colorado – Boulder. His published work has appeared in many different journals and books, including the Physical Review A, the Journal of Mathematical Physics, Nuovo Cimento, the American Journal of Physics, the Journal of Sports Engineering, and the MacMillan Encyclopedia of Physics.
Dr. Semon was the Assistant Editor of the American Journal of Physics from 1988 to 1990 and a member of its Advisory Board from 2011 to 2013. He has been a referee for many professional journals, including Foundations of Physics, the American Journal of Physics, The Physics Teacher, and the Canadian Journal of Physics. He also has been a book reviewer for Cambridge, Oxford and Yale University Presses, as well as Brooks - Cole, Springer - Verlag, Prentice Hall, and Wadsworth Publishers.
Dr. Semon has received grants from the National Research Corporation and the National Science Foundation. He also was featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World. Although Dr. Semon is now fully retired he still actively follows developments physics and astrophysics.
