Currently a Stanford Linear Accelerator Center affiliate with KLA-Tencor, Dr. Maldonado commenced his career as a supervisor of the Electronics Shop of the physics department of the University of Maryland (UM), where he worked from 1962 to 1963. He became a research assistant at the University of Maryland, to perform research on his PhD thesis (Magnetic field induced surface states in superconductor Indium) under Professor Fred Koch. After graduation from UM, Dr. Maldonado became a member of the technical staff of Bell Laboratories. Here Dr. Maldonado developed an x-ray fluorescence system for the thickness measurements of AuCu layers on the lead contacts of Si chips in Semiconductor production lines. This accomplishment solved a very important problem at AT&T and Dr. Maldonado was honored for this.
Looking for better research opportunities, Dr. Maldonado joined the IBM T.J. Watson Research center in 1980 and became manager in 1985.
