With a background that includes general and corporate aviation, as well as education, Dr. Hoover is currently teaching as a full professor of aviation at Central Washington University (CWU) in Ellensburg, WA. More than 200 women have notably participated since its founding.
In the mid 1980s, Dr. Hoover worked as a geologist, wilderness river guide and chef for Rocky Mountain River Tours in Idaho, and spent winters as a trip leader for Baja expeditions in La Paz, Mexico. She was the event coordinator of the 1990 Centennial River Trip for the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association in Boise, ID. She has accrued over 7,000 flight hours, has given over 4,500 hours of flight instruction, and has logged over 1,200 hours of instruction time in flight simulators.
Dr. Hoover began working in aviation as a backcountry Air Taxi Pilot. Between 1992 and 1995, she was a charter pilot and flight instructor for SP Aircraft in Boise, and taught mountain flying courses sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration. She spent another two years as a chief flight instructor for BobKat Aviation in Boise between 1995 and 1997. In 1996, Dr. Hoover established McCall Mountain Canyon Flying Seminars in Idaho as principal and co-owner, where she promoted safety in the Idaho backcountry. She also served as the director of aviation at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, OR, between 1998 and 2003 before landing her faculty position at CWU.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Hoover has authored approximately 30 articles and manuals on mountain and canyon flying, has contributed chapters to several books, where she was the recipient of a 2005 Outstanding Book Award, and is the primary author of the book "Mountain, Canyon, and Backcountry Flying," soon to be released by Aviation Supplies and Academics. In addition to her writings, she has given more than 80 presentations for various organizations throughout the country in her area of expertise.
Dr. Hoover is a member and former Chapter Vice President of the Oregon Pilots Association, member and former Vice President of the local Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and lifetime member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Locally, Dr. Hoover has been involved as a director and organizer for the Young Women's ACES Academy, volunteer for the Boise Parks and Recreation and member of the advisory board for Benson High School Aviation in Portland, OR.
The recipient of a Wolf Aviation Fund Grant in 2004, Dr. Hoover has also received multiple awards and recognitions for her work. More recently, she was honored with the 2006 Excellence in Teaching Award from the CWU Alumni Association, the 2011 President's Faculty Award from CWU, 2008 Rotary of Ellensburg Service Above Self Award, and 2006 Excellence in Construction Award from Associated General Contractors of America. She has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
Dr. Hoover earned an Associate of Arts in general studies from the University of Central Florida, Bachelor of Science in geology from Texas Christian University and Master of Science in geology and Doctor of Philosophy in education from Oregon State University, all summa cum laude. She is a Certified Flight Instructor, with instrument rating, and commercial pilot through the FAA.
She is especially grateful to her mentors, pictured in order: (1) Karen Lund of the United States Geological Survey, Virginia (USGS). "Karen was my thesis advisor for my MS at OSU and we are still friends 35 years later. In a field where women are a large minority, Karen inspired me to do my best. She showed by example that thoughtfulness, inquisitiveness, kindness, and integrity are important to be successful and happy at whatever I wanted to be." (2) the late James Larkin was also Dr. Hoover's mentor and her personal hero. His accolades include the 2 Million Miles of Non-Accident Safe Flying Award, the Wright Brother's "Master Pilot" Award, the FAA Safe Pilot Award, and induction into the Idaho Aviation Hall of Fame, and (3) Richard "Dick" Williams. "Dick Williams retired from the backcountry aviation world; he flew for the forest service and the Inner Agency Fire Center. I started doing the book ("Mountain, Canyon, and Backcountry Flying") on my own, but thought collaboration is good when it is done with the right person. I thought of Dick and brought him on board and it has been a fantastic experience because he brought a lot of depth and richness to the product."
In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Amy Lynn Hoover, Ph.D., CFII, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
