After accruing more than 35 years of practiced industry experience, Dr. Mixson retired from her role as academic dean of Wallace State Community College in 1996, where she also served as an English instructor and assistant academic dean between 1982 and 1983. Earlier in her career, she taught English on the high school and collegiate levels with Dothan High School and Enterprise State Community College. Over the years, she also gained valuable expertise through Alabama Aviation and Technical as interim president, the Alabama Professional Development Task Force as a coordinator, and the Auburn University Center for Arts and Humanities as a member of the advisory board.
An expert in her field, Dr. Mixson holds a Bachelor of Science from Troy State University, a Master of Science from Auburn University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University. Subsequently, she pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Southern Mississippi and Troy University. In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, she maintains affiliation with the Ozark Literary Club, the Dale County Education Retirees and the Troy University Legacy Giving Council. In her spare time, she also contributes to her community through a number of organizations, such as the, Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind and the Alabama Humanities Foundation and Ozark-Dale County Library Board. She has also been active in the United Methodist Church throughout her tenure.
In light of her professional accomplishments, she earned three Teacher of the Year Awards through Enterprise State Community College and an Administrator of the Year Award and Distinguished Leadership Award through the Alabama Community College System. Troy University named her Alumnus of the Year, the Florida State University College of Education named her a Distinguished Educator, and the Auburn University College of Education named her an Outstanding Alumnus. She cites these three awards as absolute highlights of her career. She has also been featured in the 21st edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Looking ahead, Dr. Mixson intends to continue enjoying her retirement with her strong commitment to lifelong learning ad lifelong service. She remains passionate about promoting educational opportunities for both students and faculty.
