Dr. Stephen J. Bury has been an Andrew W. Mellon chief librarian at the Frick Art Reference Library since 2010.

Dr. Bury has been an Andrew W. Mellon chief librarian at the Frick Art Reference Library since 2010. Located in New York City, the library provides public access to materials and programs focused on the study of fine and decorative arts from the fourth to the mid-twentieth century. It also serves as an international research community and supports various institutional initiatives. Dr. Bury formerly headed the European and American collections at The British Library in London, England, between 2002 and 2010 and headed the Modern English collections between 2000 and 2002. During his tenure in London, he notably created the web archive and later launched the United Kingdom web archive at the House of Commons. Dr. Bury also held appointments at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London and the Chelsea School of Art between 1978 and 2000.
Dr. Bury served as a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council Peer Review College. He was also a board member for the Center for Book Arts, Inc., in New York, which is an organization dedicated to contemporary interpretations of the book as an art object while preserving traditional practices of the art of the book.
Over the years, Dr. Bury has contributed articles to various magazines. He is the author of five books: "Brian Chalkley: New Work" in 1990, "Artists' Books" in 1995 (a new edition in 2015), "Artists' Multiples" in 2001, "Peter Liversidge" in 2004, and "Breaking the Rules" in 2007. He is also a former advisor editor for the "Benezit Dictionary of Artists" and former contributing author of "Dictionnaire de l'Art Moderne." He was a contributing author to the "Oxford Dictionary of National Biography."
Dr. Bury is an elected fellow of the Chartered Institute of Librarians and Information Professionals. He is also a longtime member and former chair of the national coordinating committee of the Art Librarians Society in the United Kingdom and a member of the Chelsea Arts Club and the Grolier Club.
Born in Blackburn, England, Dr. Bury recalls visiting his local library often as a child. Acquiring his first job in a library years later, he decided to pursue a career in the field. Receiving a Bachelor of Arts in modern history with honors from the University of Oxford in 1975, he then earned a Diploma in Librarianship from the University College in London in 1977, followed by a Master of Arts in Victorian Studies in 1986 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1990 from Birkbeck College in London.
Dr. Bury received an H.W.C. Davis Prize from University of Oxford in 1973. He has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World since 1995. For more information, please visit www.frick.org/research/library.
