A state legislator with a long history of public service, Mr. Yonts is highly renowned in his field for his professionalism, integrity and compassion. Bringing with him more than four decades of experience, his story begins in his early education. "I was in one of the last one-room schools in Kentucky, where I had the same teacher for all six years of my primary education," he recalls, adding that the school had a potbelly coal-fired stove, outdoor toilets and water drawn from wells. Mr. Yonts' fond memories are vivid and specific, but the greatest takeaway can be summed up simply: it was a great education.
Growing into adulthood, Mr. Yonts first considered pursuing a teaching career to follow in the illustrious footsteps of his educators while paying homage to his experience growing up on a farm. "I wanted to teach agriculture." he says, adding that after one semester at Murray State University, he changed the direction of his professional path. Mr. Yonts graduated from Murray State University in 1971 with honors with a major in political science and four minors in agriculture, English, education and military science. Upon graduating from college, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army, as an Adjutant General Officer. He commanded two companies including the Third Army Postal Unit, the World War II Postal Company of General George Patton. Also upon college graduation he was certified to teach middle and high school.
Thereafter, Mr. Yonts was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. He served in the U.S. Army for two years before going to law school to prepare for his career in public service and law. He concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Kentucky in 1975. In 1978, Mr. Yonts established his law firm, currently known as Yonts, Shennan & Driskill, PSC, where he remains active as a partner and provides compassionate and insightful legal counsel in matters of personal injury, federal black lung, social security disability, criminal defense and family law.
Gratified by his career, Mr. Yonts was inspired to serve his community in a larger way. In 1997, he was elected for District 15 to the Kentucky House of Representatives, a position in which he excelled for 20 years. During his time in the House of Representatives, he was very proud of his efforts to direct public policy. Mr. Yonts additionally served in various posts during this time, including as Chairman of the House State Government Committee. He was Chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures Labor and Economic Development Committee where he also served on many special task focuses.
As a result of these experiences, Mr. Yonts traveled all over the country as well as internationally, sharing his expertise on matters regarding job creation. His national chairmanship took him on multiple conferences across the country in problem solving meetings with other legislators and professionals. He was called upon to visit Canada, Germany, Poland, Austria and Taiwan to help develop better economic opportunities between them and the US. In Germany, he met Chancellor Angela Merkel.
At the state level, he broke records in his ability to get bills passed by working with both sides of the aisle. Notably, Mr. Yonts was the sponsor of 54 bills and co-sponsored more than 200 bills, a testament to his exemplary and versatile service to his state and country at multiple levels.
