Interested in pursuing these endeavors, he attended the University of North Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in physical therapy in 1977, followed by a Master of Science in physical therapy in 1982. Thereafter, he received a Doctor of Education from North Carolina State University in Raleigh in 1988. After gaining prominence in the field, he earned an additional doctoral degree in physical therapy from Boston University in 2007. Dr. Bohannon has been board certified in neurologic physical therapy since 1999.
Dr. Bohannon commenced his career as a staff therapist at Wake County Medical Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1977, holding the position for four years. After serving a brief stint as chief physical therapist at the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago in 1982, he acted in the same role at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, from 1983 to 1989. From 1987 to 2015, he served as a professor of physical therapy at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, having also been a senior scientist in the research department of Hartford Hospital from 1999 to 2004. Since 2015, Dr. Bohannon has been a professor of physical therapy at Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
A frequent consultant in the field, Dr. Bohannon also served as the editor of the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy from 2002 to 2007 and again from 2013 to 2018. Furthermore, he has contributed more than 400 articles to professional journals. A fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association, the American Society of Neurorehabilitation, the Gerontological Society of America and the American Heart Association, Dr. Bohannon also maintains affiliation with the International Parkinson Movement Disorders Society and the New York Academy of Sciences.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Bohannon has accrued several honors from the American Physical Therapy Association. He received the Helen J. Hislop Award for outstanding contributions to professional literature, the Marian Williams Award for research in physical therapy and the Jules M. Rothstein Golden Pen Award for scientific writing. Dr. Bohannon has also been highlighted in the seventh edition of Who's Who in American Education and the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the World, as well as the sixth and seventh editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
