With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. McQuarrie has been an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery (and a secondary appointment as Associate Professor of Neuroscience) at Case Western Reserve University since 1988, retiring in 2011. He previously served the University as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery from 1981 to 1987, Assistant Professor of Developmental Genetics and Anatomy from 1981 to 1985, and Visiting Assistant Professor of Anatomy from 1979 to 1981. From 1979 to 1981, he was Visiting Assistant Professor or Anatomy.
Prior to obtaining these roles, he was Assistant Professor of Physiology at Cornell University Medical College in New York City (from 1976 to 1981), and Research Fellow in Physiology from 1971 to 1976. From 1979 to 1981, Dr. McQuarrie was Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Cornell University Medical College and Assistant Attending Neurosurgeon at New York Hospital. After graduating from Cornell University School of Medicine in 1965, he was intern, assistant surgeon, and surgeon at New York Hospital. After completing that internship and residency, he became Chief of Neurosurgery at Boston Naval Hospital from 1973 to 1974, with the rank of Commander, U.S. Naval Reserve.
Dr. McQuarrie began his career at the University of Utah in 1957, receiving the Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology (Genetics) in 1961. He continued those studies after medical school, receiving the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Neurobiology and Behavior at the Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences (New York City) in 1977. Later in his career, he received a Master of Business Administration degree from Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Business in 2007. Dr. McQuarrie is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurosurgery, and was Principal Investigator of a molecular biology research laboratory at Case Western Reserve University from 1981 to 2001 (funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) resulting in over 60 primary research publications accessible through Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com).
A respected voice in his industry, Dr. McQuarrie has been an active leader in clinical, academic, and military communities. He is the former chair of the VA Office of Regeneration Research Programs. He was President of the Cleveland Medical Library Association from 2006 to 2007, and since 2005 has served on the Board of Directors of the Medical Center Company (a private utility serving Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland). Honors include visiting lectureships (e.g. The Elizabeth Crosby Lecture at the University of Michigan) and military awards (e.g. Legion of Merit from the U.S. Marine Corps). He retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve at the ranks of Captain (USNR) and Colonel (USMCR) in 2005.
Among his notable achievements, Dr. McQuarrie is most renowned for research into the mechanism of axonal regeneration in the central and peripheral nervous systems, with particular emphasis on biochemical investigations of complex intraneuronal transport mechanisms responsible for that regrowth.
