Herring with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Herring celebrates a lifetime of achievements in her professional networks and is widely recognized for her leadership, credentials and success in her fields of law and photography.
Recently retired with more than four decades of legal experience, Herring worked in private practice as the principal of Herring Law Firm, founded in 1983 in Des Moines, Iowa. Prior to this, she was Assistant Attorney General for the State of Iowa from 1979 to 1983, and an associate of Austin and Gaudineer law firm from 1976 to 1979.
Herring graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in government in 1970 at Beloit College and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Drake University in 1976. She pursued her postgraduate coursework at American University in 1977.
Herring has been admitted to practice law by the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, and the State of Iowa.
Herring was appointed to the Grievance Commission for the Supreme Court of Iowa, which she served from 1993 to 1999. She was also appointed chair of the Iowa Supreme Court's Rules of Civil Procedure Commission. In addition, she has authored articles for law journals and written columns relevant to the Mac User for the American Bar Association's GP Solo Magazine.
Herring was inspired to become an attorney by her attorney father, Clyde E. Herring, who also served on the Interstate Commerce Commission in the early 1960s. She attributes her success in law to Drake law professor M. Gene Blackburn and fellow attorney and friend Janet Johnson.
In a law career filled with highlights, Herring recalls her proudest moments and involvement in landmark cases: proving a woman homemaker's worth prior to it becoming law; supporting the adoption of the Civil Rights Attorney's Fees Award Act of 1976; and litigating before and on behalf of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission.
Herring also excels as a fine art photographer, a field in which she has earned recognition and an enthusiastic following of collectors. Her work has been juried, shown and awarded for many years in art festivals and competitions, including Worldwide International Photographic Competition; Denver International Airport Juried Competition; Fort Dearborn/Chicago Photo Forum; Octagon Center for the Arts Exhibition; and the Circle Foundation for the Arts.

Herring's unique photographic perspective on the world became a second career focus in 2005, when she established JourneyZing, a personalized travel-planning business. One success led to another, and in 2015, she became the founding partner and manager of Artisan Gallery 2018, located in the historic art district of West Des Moines' Valley Junction. The gallery features her fine art photography, as well as the artistic works of her partners, and other outstanding Iowa artists.
And yet, Herring finds time for making contributions to her community and civic causes. Since 2011, she has served as a trustee for Des Moines University, an osteopathic medical school. She served as chair of the Iowa Democratic Party State Platform Committee; vice chair of the Iowa ERA Coalition; and chair for the Iowa Women's Political Caucus. She was also selected for Leadership Iowa.
Other organizations that have benefitted from her leadership and expertise include the Consortium, a women leaders' business group that she founded in 1977. Herring was a founder and president of Polk County Women Attorneys from 1977 to 1979. She was a member of the board of library trustees for the Polk County Bar Association from 1987 to 1993. Herring was a member of the American Association for Justice from 1983 to 2010, and a member of the executive board of its Employment Rights Section from 2002 to 2010, which she chaired in 2007 and 2008. She was a member of the Iowa Organization of Women Attorneys, the Iowa State Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Among the numerous accolades Herring has accrued, she was recognized among the Best Lawyers in America in civil rights and discrimination law from 1995 to 2000. She was presented with the Distinguished Peer-Rating for High Professional Achievement from Martindale-Hubbell. She has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
