At the start of her career, she joined the University of California. Over the years, Dr. Cranston taught French, Latin and Italian at Clemson University and French at the University of California, California State University, and the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She was a visiting professor at Philipps University, Marburg, Germany.
Dr. Cranston earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley. A member of the Modern Language Association, she has published creative and critical works, including Beyond the Book: Marguerite Duras Infans, Orion Resurgent: René Char, Poet of Presence and Mains Serrées, Poèmes en Trois Langues. She also served as president of the Southern Comparative Literature Association, and editor of The Comparatist.
Dr. Cranston was decorated with the Palmes Académiques through the French Ministry of Education. She has also received grants through the Ministry of Education in Paris, France and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
