Dr. James Franklin Haynes is a professor of economics, emeritus with Athens State University .

A professor of economics, emeritus with Athens State University where he was employed for over twenty-five years, Dr. Haynes served Athens State University as a professor of economics, the dean of the School of Business, the director of the small business development center, and the director of the center for economic education. While serving with the School of Business he led the process of achieving professional accreditation of its academic programs. He prepared and wrote the self-study report, which was quite a challenge but a very rewarding experience. Obtaining professional accreditation was a great honor for the university. Prior to his tenure at Athens State University, Dr. Haynes was a successful instructor of 12th grade economics at Grissom High School with the Huntsville City School System from 1971-1980. He also served as an adjunct instructor of economics with the University of Alabama in Huntsville from 1976 to 1985.
After majoring in economics in college, Dr. Haynes accepted employment as the credit manager with the Atlas Finance Company, a national financial services firm, in Cullman, Alabama in 1963. He was appointed as resident adjuster with the Continental Insurance Company, an international property and casualty insurer, in Birmingham, Alabama in 1964. He and his family moved to Huntsville, Alabama in 1966 and after being employed in business for nine years he changed the direction of his career toward education in 1971.
Dr. Haynes was the author numerous articles published in professional journals and led several professional workshops. He researched the ancestry of his family and wrote the book, The Genealogy of the Haynes and Vaughn Families, and distributed copies to family members and several area libraries.
A past president of the Alabama Association of Higher Education in Business, Dr. Haynes is a longstanding member of professional organizations as well, including the American Economic Association, Omicron Delta Epsilon, the national honor society in economics, the National Association of Economic Educators, and the Alabama Council on Economic Education. He is affiliated with several organizations such as the Vanderbilt Commodore Club, The United States Power Squadron, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Guntersville, Alabama Historical Association. He contributed to his community as a member of the board of the homeowners association for the Summerwood planned community from 2001-2003 and served on the board for the Panama City Beach Senior Center from 2004 to 2006. He was the recipient of the Commitment to Teaching Award presented by the Athens State University Alumni Association in 2000 and the Excellence in Teaching Award presented by Delta Mu Delta in 1995. Dr. Haynes has also been featured in the 20th and 21st editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Haynes pursued an education at Millsaps College, earning a B.A. in economics as a dean's list student in 1962, where he as a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity. He continued his academic efforts and was awarded a M.S. by Alabama A & M University in 1973. Following these accomplishments, he concluded his academic studies by being awarded a Doctor of Philosophy by Vanderbilt University in 1981. The title of his dissertation was "An Analysis of the Relationship between Economic Knowledge and Attitudes toward Economic Issues."
