Alongside this role, he also acts as a biologist at the VH Medical Center in Augusta, GA, a role he has held since 2011. Prior to these appointments, he served the Medical College of Georgia as the director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics from 2000 to 2010, director of the Institute of Neuroscience at Augusta University from 2000 to 2009, and professor of biochemistry and department chair at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1988 to 2000.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Yu served Yale University in multiple capacities, including as professor from 1983 to 1988, associate professor from 1975 to 1982, and assistant professor from 1973 to 1975. He commenced his career as a research associate and instructor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in 1967, holding the position for five years. Alongside his primary career endeavors, Dr. Yu has been elected an academician at Academia Sinica in Taiwan since 2004, having previously served as Commissioner at the Georgia Commission for Saving the Cure and Georgia Commission of Newborn Umbilical Cord Blood Research and Medical Treatment from 2007 to 2008. In the past, he also served as a member of several study sections of the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC, and a member of the Advisory Board of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, New York. He has since remained an informal member of these organizations since 1996.
Contributing more than 400 full articles to professional publications during his tenure, Dr. Yu acted as editor of four books: "Ganglioside Structure, Function and Biomedical Potential" in 1984, "New Trends in Ganglioside Research: Neurochemical and Neurodegenerative Aspects" in 1988, "Sphingolipids as Signaling Modulators in the Nervous System" in 1998, and "Glycobiology of the Nervous System" in 2014. In addition to these achievements, he has maintained affiliation with such organizations as the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Lifetime Member), the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Chemical Society (Lifetime Member), the American Society of Cell Biology, the International Society of Neurochemistry and the American Society of Neurochemistry, where he served as president from 2001 to 2003, and the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America where he also served as president from 2008-2010. He also maintains memberships with many other professional societies.
Dr. Yu is highly educated, having received a Bachelor of Science from Tunghai University in Taiwan in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 1967. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was also presented with an honorary medical doctorate from the University of Tokyo in Japan in 1980 and an honorary master's degree from Yale University in 1985. Likewise, he was named a Josiah Macy Scholar in 1979 and has been a grantee of the National Institutes of Health since 1975.
In light of his exceptional achievements in his field, Dr. Yu has accrued several accolades and honors. The recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award in 1990, he received the Virginia Outstanding Scientist of the Year Award in 1995, the Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar's Award in 2000, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Tunghai University in 2003. The following year, he also received an Achievement Award from the Chinese Association of Engineers and Scientists of Southern California. Later on in his career, he was twice presented with an Outstanding Faculty Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Medical College of Georgia. He has also received the Veterans Administration Merit Award every year since 2010 and the Academician Award from Academia Sinica every year since 2004.
