Wilmer Kerns was honorably recognized a Distinguished West Virginian by the Governor of West Virginia.

After accruing 40 years of practiced industry experience, Dr. Kerns retired from his role as a senior research analyst with the Social Security Administration. Earlier in his career, he worked for the Norfolk Public Schools as a mathematics teacher, before excelling at the Washington-Lee High School as a counselor. Over the years, Dr. Kerns found success in numerous industries through his work with Arlington County Public Schools, the U.S. Office of Education, the Ohio State University and the Social and Rehabilitation Service, where he served as the associate regional commissioner, the planning officer and the division chief.

A certified teacher and counselor, Dr. Kerns has earned a Bachelor of Arts from Trevecca Nazarene University, a Master of Arts from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Ohio State University. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he is affiliated with the Morgan County Historical Society and the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Association. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Kerns authored "Shanholtzer History and Allied Family Roots," "Frederick County, Virginia: Settlement and First Families" and "Kerns Family Roots in Virginia."

Although his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Kerns is especially proud of helping to desegregate schools in the south in the late 1960s. Due to his professional excellence, he was honorably recognized a Distinguished West Virginian by the Governor of West Virginia. Looking toward the future, Dr. Kerns intends to continue enjoying his retirement.
