Ms. Kumar is an accomplished artist, photographer and poet who began her career with Karl Mann Associates in New York City in 1966. Later working as a photo colorist with the American Photograph Corporation in New York City in 1973 and as airbrush artist with Leichtner Photography Studios in Rochester, NY, in 1978, she eventually went into business for herself as a freelancer doing various projects in India and then for Let There Be Dragons in Fairport, NY. After the shop closed a few years ago, she focused on photographing the beautiful sights in the area.
Over the past near 30 years, Ms. Kumar's photography has been on display in New York City at such locations as Union Square and West Sixth Annual Open Studios. Her poetry has been included in Outstanding Poets of 1994, on "The Sounds of Poetry," which was published approximately a dozen times on the cassettes of the National Library of Poetry, and in 28 anthologies through Eber & Wein Publishing in New Freedom Pennsylvania. In 2012, Ms. Kumar's book of poetry, "Unfold the Sky," published through New Freedom Pennsylvania, became a permanent part of the collection at Poet's House in New York City.
During the 1960s, Ms. Kumar was very active with The Peace and Freedom Party in San Francisco, was a co-sponsor of the MLK Memorial Statue in Washington, DC, and was active with the N.S.M. Martin Luther King's Congress of Racial Equality from New York City to Baltimore. She also spent time as a tutor and news manager for the Harlem Education Project in New York City.
Ms. Kumar is a longstanding member of The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc., the Academy of American Poets, the National Library of Poetry and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Honored for her work, she received an International Who's Who in Poetry Award from Eber & Wein Publishing in 2012, won Third Prize in a national poetry contest in 2010 and received a Golden Poetry Award from the World of Poetry in 1989, 1990 and 1991. She has also been included in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts from Kent State University in 1963, Ms. Kumar then spent one year studying at the Art Students League of New York between 1965 and 1966. She later became certified in photography through the New York Institute of Photography in 1973. In her free time, Ms. Kumar enjoys not only painting her own artwork, but also collecting others' works. She has since taken up writing creative nonfiction as well.
