Dr. Iben is an astrophysicist and distinguished professor emeritus in the department of astronomy at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Teaching at the university for 28 years between 1972 and 2000, during his tenure he taught astronomy and physics, headed the astronomy department and, between 1989 and 1999, was named distinguished professor of astronomy and physics. While at the University of Illinois, he also held the title of Eberly family chair in astronomy at Pennsylvania State University between 1989 and 1990. Dr. Iben formerly held teaching appointments at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Williams College and was a senior research fellow in physics at California Institute of Technology.
Best known for his contributions to theoretical star models, stellar evolution theory, works concerning the production of planetary nebulae, red giant heavy element convection and modelling of asymptotic branch thermal pulses, Dr. Iben's work with stellar evolution theory was a highlight. While serving as a research fellow at California Institute of Technology between 1961 and 1964, he was successful in getting his theory to work. Honored to collaborate with Nobel Prize winner Dr. William A. Fowler, who studied nuclear reactions important in stellar evolution, Dr. Iben since authored a two-volume series called "Stellar Evolution Physics" based on his theory in 2012 and 2013.
Throughout his career in academia, Dr. Iben served as a visiting professor and guest professor at several national and international colleges and universities, including Hokkaido University Graduate School of Science in Japan, the University of Kiel in Germany, the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii and Harvard University. Furthermore, he served on the visiting committee for Aura Observatories and was a visiting fellow at the Joint Institute for Laboratory of Astrophysics at the University of Colorado, among other roles.
Dr. Iben is a member and former councilor of the American Astronomical Society and a member of the International Astronomical Union and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
The recipient of a George Darwin Lectureship in 1984 and an Eddington Medal in 1990 from the Royal Astronomical Society, Dr. Iben was also a University of Tokyo fellow in 1985 and John Simon Guggenheim Memorial fellow between 1985 and 1986. He soon after received a McMillin Lecturship from Ohio State University in 1987, a Henry Norris Russell Lectureship from the American Astronomical Society in 1989, a Niigata University fellowship in 1990 and a Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center senior fellowship in 2002. Dr. Iben has been cited in approximately 55 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in American Education.
Dr. Iben has held a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University since 1953, followed by a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois since 1954 and 1958, respectively.
